Here are 5 ways you can buy smart in the current market. 1. Buy for the long term. Real estate is a long term investment. Choose a home that will meet your lifestyle needs for the next few years. Give your new home some time to appreciate so you are in a comfortable position if and when you decide to sell. 2. Lock in a fixed rate. Take advantage of the current mortgage market and secure a loan that will deliver for the long-term. A short-term adjustable rate mortgage may be tempting, but why not take the security of the fixed rate? If you're buying for the long-term, your interest rate should be for the long-term, too. 3. Negotiate with knowledge. You can learn a lot about a seller's position and motivations by asking a few key questions before you make your offer.
